What should I do to secure my home computer or personal laptop before connecting to the VPN?

Before conncting to the University's Virtual Private Network (VPN), please update the operating system and anti-virus software on your home computer or personal laptop.

  • Update the operating system.  New security concerns develop frequently.  Mac and Microsoft updates are free to download:

Windows OS Updates:  http://update.microsoft.com/
(Please note:  The Microsoft Update site will immediately scan your machine and prompt you to install any missing updates. Click the "Install" button when prompted.)

Mac OS Updates:  http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

  • Install and update anti-virus software.  Viruses can corrupt your data or slow down your network.  There are many anti-virus software applications available.  Two anti-virus software applications that are free to download include:

AVG for Windows:  http://free.avg.com/

ClamXav for Mac:  http://www.clamxav.com/
